My name is Jennifer Holsey. I am a Wellness Advocate with doTERRA, a company that provides Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils. They come in the form of pure oils, such as those in the picture above. They also have items for everyday use that are made with oils, not with chemicals you can’t pronounce. Those include deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, cleaning products, and a skin care line.
I will admit that I was skeptical about trying essential oils. I was interested in them, but still skeptical. I was invited to a doTERRA DIY class, where we made cleaning wipes, hand sanitizer, bug spray, and lip balm. I mainly went to make those things and see if they worked. It hadn’t fully occurred to me that the oils could also be used for your health. Once they did the introduction and passed some samples around to try, I became more intrigued. My biggest thing is that I want to get away from as much medication as I can. I hate taking pills, and I take a lot every day. I dislike pill taking so much that I would rather suffer in pain than take an Aleve or Ibuprofen. One thing I thought I could work on was my sleep. Before I was introduced to oils, I was taking three pills every night for sleep—two to get tired enough to fall asleep, and one to help my stay asleep. Even with those, it would take over an hour to get tired and I would start waking up after about 5 hours. I just was not getting quality sleep, and it was making me groggy and still tired in the mornings. This wasn’t so bad in the summer when I could easily take a short nap on the couch in the morning. But I still didn’t like it because I was wasting my mornings away and missing out on time with my two boys. Then it became a problem when I went back to school in August and had to drive for an hour to get to school 5 mornings a week. Something needed to change.
I had tried Lavender by itself since it is known for its relaxing qualities, but it wasn’t working for me. After talking to a Wellness Advocate at the oils class, I learned that oils work differently for different people. She gave me a list of different oils that have been shown to work for other people. What ended up being the winning combination for me is their Serenity blend, lavender, vetiver, and wild orange oils. I feel like I’m an example of a more extreme case of an inability to fall and stay asleep. Sometimes it only takes one oil or blend to get the desired outcome. Since I started using that blend every night in a diffuser by my bed, I have been able to eliminate my sleeping medication. I use a combination of vetiver and lavender to help relax and let me feel tired, then I set my diffuser when I’m ready to go to bed. A diffuser works similar to a humidifier, where it holds water and creates a mist when turned on and it fills the room. The difference is that you can add oils to a diffuser; they will break down a regular humidifier after time. Just 2-3 drops of your oils in the water will create a wonderful scent and allow you to inhale the oils.
There are three different ways to get the oils into your body. They can be used aromatically, such as in a diffuser or putting a drop or two of the oil in your hands and cupping them around your nose and mouth to inhale the oils. Another way is to apply them topically. This can be done by layering the oils one at a time, or using a carrier oil mixed with them, such as fractionated coconut oil. And finally, there are some oils that are safe for ingestion. They can be added to a glass of water, or you can put the oils in an empty capsule to swallow and ingest.
There are many great uses for essential oils. I can’t even begin to explain them all. For example, there are oils and blends that help with respiratory issues, digestive issues, memory and focus, mood swings. My husband loves the Deep Blue blend. He will do just a couple of drops mixed with the fractionated coconut oil and massage it on his neck and shoulders when those muscles get tight. (Okay, I massage the mixture on him. It’s just better when someone else does it.) My favorite go-to when I’m in school and need to study for an exam is InTune, the focus blend. A little of that rolled onto the back of my neck, and I am ready to study. I made a blend of Serenity, Balance, and Lavender for my 5-year-old when he gets “out of control”. I mixed them with some fractionated coconut oil in a roller bottle, and swipe it on the bottoms of his feet. It really helps to calm him down and get him out of the bad mood. Wild orange is quite possibly my favorite oil, mainly for its wonderful smell but also for its uses. It has a very uplifting quality, can be used to mask the less pleasant smells, and works great for cleaning. Just a few drops of Wild Orange can help mask the smell of vinegar if you use that for your cleaning. Imagine using essential oils and natural ingredients for all of your cleaning supplies! No harsh chemicals that smell bad or make it hard to breathe if you get too close to their spray range.
